I am beginning a new series of blog posts today. I am calling it The Blessing Series. We will take a look a a few individuals in scripture and see how either they were blessed by God, or how they blessed others. Then we will look at how we can experience those same blessings today. Remember that God is no respecter of persons and that He is the same today as He always has been. I am convinced that God desires to bless His children. (See Ephesians 1:13)
In this first writing of this series I want to talk about The Blessing of Abraham. Galatians 3:13-14 says: Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
There is so much that could be said about this subject that it would take an entire book to cover it. (In fact there are books on this subject.) But I want to narrow the focus here and simply encourage you to get on a journey of looking at the life of Abraham through a new lens. (1) Identify ways in which He was blessed by God. (One person identified over 60.) (2) Ask God to bless you in the same way. It is your inheritance.
Although there are many different ways in which God blessed Abraham, here are just a few to get us started:
—Abraham was justified by faith and not by works. It was grace. (Galatians 3:5-9)
—Abraham enjoyed a friendship relationship with God. (James 2:23)
—Abraham was blessed by God to be a blessing to others. (Genesis 12:2)
—Abraham and his descendants were promised victory over their enemies. (Genesis 22:17)
—Abraham was blessed with tremendous material wealth. (Genesis 13:2)
—Abraham was blessed with Divine protection. (Genesis 15:1)
—Abraham was blessed with walking in covenant with God. (Genesis 15:8)
—Because of his relationship as a friend with God, he was entitled to know secrets from God. (Genesis 18:17) (See John 15:15)
—Abraham enjoyed the privilege of being in the presence of God and interceding for others. (Genesis 18:16-33)
—Abraham was blessed with seeing his promises fulfilled. (Genesis 21:2-5; Hebrews 6:15)
—Abraham was blessed to see God’s provision in the midst of testing. (Genesis 22:1-14)
—Abraham was blessed in all things, even in his old age. (Genesis 24:1)
Truly we can see that Abraham was a great example of living a blessed life. But, back to our original text for a moment in Galatians 3. Jesus came to give us this kind of life. (See John 10:10) In fact, He took on the curse and broke it by dying on the cross SO THAT we could live a life that is blessed like that of Father Abraham.
Be blessed.
