Does God Still Speak Through Dreams, Visions, and Angels?
Have you ever awakened from a dream and wondered if God was trying to tell you something? Have you ever experienced something so unusual that you wondered if an angel might have been involved? Could God still be speaking to His people through dreams, visions, and angels today?
This particular subject really needs the space of an entire book to do it justice. But I don’t have that kind of space here. So, I won’t be able to go into great detail on each of these ways God speaks. Instead, I want to introduce the subject and encourage you to begin a journey of discovery on your own.
Pray about these things. Study your Bible on each of these subjects. Expect to grow in your ability to hear from God. And be open to however God wants to speak to you. We cannot limit Him!
Typically, we here in the West have been heavily influenced by the Greek way of thinking. Our approach to life tends to be more logical and analytical in nature. On the other hand, many Eastern cultures have traditionally taken a more intuitive approach to life and have been more open to supernatural experiences.
Whichever approach we take, we must be thoroughly grounded in the Word of God. The Bible is our ultimate authority.
The fact is, the Bible is filled with examples of God speaking to His people through dreams, visions, and angelic encounters. From Genesis to Revelation, we find examples of God using these means to communicate.
So the question becomes: “Is God still the same, or has He changed?”
“Does God still speak in these ways, or has He stopped?”
I believe that God is the same today as He has always been. (See Hebrews 13:8.) And I believe that God still speaks today, just as He did in the past. (See Hebrews 1:1.)
Ten Thoughts About Dreams, Visions, and Angels
Here are some thoughts for you to consider as you study these subjects.
1. Not all dreams are from God—but some are.
We must learn to discern when God may be drawing near and attempting to communicate something to us. Not every dream has spiritual significance, but we shouldn’t automatically dismiss the possibility that God may be speaking.
2. Dreams are mostly pictorial and symbolic in nature.
The pictures in dreams can represent something beyond their literal meaning. Jesus frequently used pictures, illustrations, and parables to communicate spiritual truths to people.
3. Dreams need to be interpreted.
And who better to ask for the interpretation than the author of the dream—God Himself? Daniel, in the book that bears his name, is a wonderful example of someone who depended upon God for the interpretation of dreams.
4. Visions can occur while we are awake.
Sometimes a person may see a scene or picture in their mind. When we believe something like this may be from God, we need to pray and ask Him to unfold its meaning and application.
5. The Bible contains hundreds of references to angels.
Angels are not merely figures in a Christmas story. Throughout Scripture, we see them carrying out assignments and fulfilling the purposes of God.
6. Angels can be active around us even when we are unaware of their presence.
Just because we cannot see something doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t happening. The Bible gives us examples of angelic activity that was not immediately visible to those involved.
7. Angels can sometimes appear in human form without our realizing who they are.
Hebrews 13:2 reminds us that some have entertained angels without knowing it. That is an amazing thought!
8. Angels do not take their direction from us. They heed the Word of God.
Psalm 103:20–21 says:
“Bless the Lord, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word. Bless the Lord, all you His hosts, You ministers of His, who do His pleasure.”
Angels carry out God’s commands and fulfill His purposes. However, we can declare and decree the Word of God, as we do, angels heed His Word.
9. Pay attention to those moments when you awaken with a sense of God’s nearness.
I love Zechariah 4:1. It says:
“Now the angel who talked with me came back and wakened me, as a man who is wakened out of his sleep.”
I have experienced times when I suddenly awakened and felt the nearness of the Lord. When that happens, I pay attention to my thoughts and feelings. I try to discern what the Holy Spirit might be saying in that moment. I want to remain sensitive to the Lord in those moments.
10. We can ask our Heavenly Father for angelic protection.
I like to pray Psalm 91:11:
“For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.”
I ask my Heavenly Father to give His angels commands concerning me. Then I trust Him.
Personally, I have a framework of belief that includes angels working around me and on my behalf, even though I may not see them or feel their presence. I trust my Heavenly Father to direct them according to His will.
A Word of Caution: Test Everything by Scripture
As much as I believe God can speak through dreams, visions, and angels, we also need to exercise wisdom and discernment.
First Thessalonians 5:19–22 says:
“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”
Notice the balance in those verses. We are not to quench the Spirit, but neither are we to accept everything without testing it.
We must remain open to the Holy Spirit while staying firmly grounded in the Word of God.
Everything concerning dreams, visions, and angels must be tested by Scripture. We also need to exercise caution so that we do not drift into New Age teachings or religious practices that are contrary to the Word of God.
Here is a helpful framework for testing these experiences:
- Does it agree with Scripture?
- Does it reflect the character and nature of God?
- Does the Holy Spirit bear witness with it?
- Is there confirmation?
- Does it produce godly fruit?
- What do other mature believers say about it?
- Does it lead me toward greater obedience to Christ?
These are important questions to ask whenever we believe God may be communicating something to us.
The goal is to know God, recognize His voice, and walk in obedience to Him.
So, be open to however God wants to speak to you. He may choose to use dreams, visions, or even angels. But whatever method He chooses, stay grounded in His Word, sensitive to His Spirit, and willing to obey.
Personal Reflection and Application
Take a few moments to consider these questions prayerfully.
- Have you ever experienced a dream, vision, or unusual circumstance that made you wonder if God was communicating something to you? How did you respond?
- Am I genuinely open to God speaking in ways that may be unfamiliar to me? Or have I placed limitations on how I believe He can communicate?
- How well am I grounded in Scripture? Am I spending enough time in God’s Word to recognize what agrees with His character and truth?
- Who are the spiritually mature believers in my life who can help me discern what I believe God may be saying? Am I willing to receive their counsel?
- Am I more interested in having a supernatural experience or in developing a deeper relationship with God?What practical step can I take this week to grow in recognizing His voice?
