Trusting the Faithfulness of His Word
What God has spoken over your life, He has never forgotten–and He still intends to fulfill it. Have you ever said something that you wished you could take back? Most of us have. The problem is that once words are spoken, they cannot be retrieved. They have been released, heard, and often felt deeply by others. We may apologize or say, “I didn’t mean that,” but our words have already made an impact. Words are powerful.
I am so grateful that God is not like us in this way. The words that come from His mouth are always true, trustworthy, intentional, and effective.
A few years ago, someone gave me a framed copy of Psalm 89:34–35 written in beautiful German calligraphy. I do not speak German, but it is the language of my ancestors. I treasure that piece of art, and it hangs in my home as a constant reminder to keep trusting God for the fulfillment of His promises in my life.
Psalm 89:34–35 says:
“My covenant I will not break,
Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.
Once I have sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David.”
What a powerful reminder of the nature of God. He is trustworthy, and every promise He makes is true. From these verses, I glean several important truths:
- God will not break a promise He has made.
- God will not alter or change any word He has spoken.
- God will never lie.
This passage also reminds me of the words of the prophet Isaiah.
Isaiah 55:10–11 says:
“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven,
And do not return there,
But water the earth,
And make it bring forth and bud,
That it may give seed to the sower
And bread to the eater,
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”
This is another incredible passage about the faithfulness and effectiveness of God’s Word. From these verses, I glean that:
- God’s Word will never return empty or fruitless.
- God’s Word will accomplish exactly what He desires.
- God’s Word will prosper in the purpose for which He sent it.
Unlike us, God never speaks carelessly or impulsively. Every word that proceeds from His mouth is purposeful, powerful, and completely reliable.
The apostle Paul reinforced this truth in II Corinthians 1:20:
“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”
I especially love how the Amplified Bible expresses this verse:
“For as many as are the promises of God, they all find their Yes in Him (Christ). For this reason we also utter the Amen (so be it) to God through Him, to the glory of God.”
From this passage, I glean that:
- Every promise God has made carries His “Yes.”
- Jesus is affirming those promises in heaven.
- Here on earth, I respond with “Amen” in agreement.
- My agreement with God’s promises brings Him glory.
Recently, I have been praying for God to fulfill every promise He has genuinely spoken over my life. Sometimes God speaks through other people, and because we are human, there can occasionally be misunderstanding or imperfect interpretation. As Paul wrote in I Corinthians 13:12, “we know in part.”
Still, that does not change the fact that whatever my Heavenly Father has truly promised remains active and meaningful. His intentions have not changed.
Because of that, I try to hold certain prophetic words with an open hand. I remain open to God fulfilling His promises differently than I originally imagined.
For example, years ago several people prayed over me and declared that I would “go to the nations” and speak. As a younger man, I assumed that meant extensive international travel and preaching abroad. That has not happened in the way I expected.
Yet today, in this season of my life, I write a weekly blog that is read by people in more than 20 countries across at least four continents. In a very real sense, God fulfilled His promise—just differently than I envisioned.
So I continue to tenaciously hold on to every authentic promise God has spoken over my life. He intends to fulfill them. He cannot lie. And He will not alter the words that have gone out from His mouth.
And He desires to do the same for you too.
1. What promises from God am I still believing for Him to fulfill?
2. Have I become discouraged because God’s timing or method looked different than I expected?
3. In what ways have I already seen God fulfill promises unexpectedly?
4. Am I responding to God’s promises with faith and agreement instead of doubt?
5. How can I strengthen my trust in the faithfulness of God’s word this week?
