Knowing about God and truly knowing Him are not the same—and the difference changes everything.
Our relationship with God was never meant to be a dry or lifeless religious formality. Instead, it is designed to be a living, vibrant, personal experience—an authentic relationship we walk out every day.
We come to know God in several ways. We know Him through Scripture. We learn His character by studying His names. We see His nature revealed through the life of Jesus. Yet beyond all of these, we also come to know God through our personal experiences with Him.
Biblical Examples of Experiencing God
The Bible shows us that knowing God personally has always been part of His design for humanity.
Moses encountered God at the burning bush (Exodus 3) and was forever changed. Even near the end of his life, Moses blessed others with “the favor of Him who dwelt in the bush” (Deuteronomy 33:16).
Job described a similar transformation after his trials, saying:
“I had heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.”
— Job 42:5 (AMP)
The apostle Paul also experienced a life-altering encounter with God on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3), an experience that reshaped his purpose and future.
These examples remind us that faith was never intended to remain theoretical—it was meant to be experienced.
From Knowledge About God to Knowing God Personally
In the Greek language of the New Testament, the word gnosis means “knowledge.” But when the prefix epi is added, forming epignosis, the meaning becomes deeper.
- Gnosis — knowing facts
- Epignosis — deep, experiential knowledge that transforms
God desires more than intellectual agreement; He invites us into transformational relationship.
This does not mean every experience must be dramatic or supernatural. Most encounters with God happen quietly, personally, and consistently over time.
Experiencing God in Everyday Life
We grow in experiential knowledge of God when we:
- Talk with God—and listen for His response.
- Pray—and recognize His answers.
- Cry out during difficult seasons—and experience His peace.
- Admit our uncertainty—and receive His wisdom.
Over time, these moments form a personal history with God.
A Relationship That Grows Over Time
Our relationship with God is similar to a child’s relationship with a loving parent. Trust develops gradually. Through repeated experiences, we learn His faithfulness and recognize His guidance.
In my own journey, I have learned that God is faithful. I have learned that although He does not always move according to my timeline, He is always good.
You can learn these truths as well.
Knowing God personally is a journey—discovering Him more deeply through the ways He interacts with us each day. Reflect on your experiences with Him. Compare them with His Word. And enjoy the process of growing closer to Him.
